The character 禹 originally depicted a reptile or worm, a meaning subtly echoed in its modern form, which retains the insect radical 虫 at its base. This ancient biological sense is no longer in use. Today, 禹 is almost exclusively recognized as the name of Yu the Great, the legendary hero who tamed the floods and founded the Xia dynasty, and it also serves as a common Chinese surname.
