Etymology
Pictograph of a bent object.
About
曲 has two main readings: qū, meaning 'bent' or 'crooked', and qǔ, meaning a musical tune or melody. It originated as a pictograph of a bent object, such as a carpenter's square or a woven reed basket, which gave it the sense of something not straight. Its form is a rectangular frame with intersecting horizontal and vertical lines. The idea of physical curvature was later applied metaphorically to the contours of a melody, giving rise to the musical sense.
