Etymology
Pictograph of two hills.
About
The character 丘 is a pictograph originally depicting two adjacent hills. Over time, its form evolved from a literal terrain sketch into a stylized structure: a horizontal base representing the ground, with vertical and intersecting strokes forming the hills. Historically, 丘 primarily meant a natural hillock or grave mound. To avoid the naming taboo around Confucius's given name, Qiu, the city radical 邑 was sometimes added, creating the variant 邱.
