Pictograph of two hills.
About
The character 丘 began as a pictograph of two adjacent hills or mounds, directly depicting that terrain. Over centuries of writing, it evolved into a stylized form: a horizontal base for the ground, with vertical and intersecting strokes rising as the hills. Historically, it meant a hillock or grave mound, and to avoid the naming taboo of Confucius (Kong Qiu), the radical 邑 (city, settlement) was sometimes added, yielding 邱.
