The word 筵席 is formed by combining 筵, which originally denoted a large bamboo mat spread on the floor for seating, and 席, which referred to a smaller mat placed atop it; together they literally represented the seating arrangements for a meal, and by extension came to mean the banquet or feast held upon them.
