About

The character is a compound ideograph created by doubling (grass), which itself is composed of two (sprout) elements. Because each stands for a single blade or shoot, combining four of them into one character graphically simulates dense, tangled vegetation. Its original meaning, dense wilderness, thick grasses, or jungle, serves as the semantic foundation for other, more complex characters related to wild flora. Because this four-sprout cluster is highly specialized and visually redundant, rarely appears as an independent character in modern Chinese; instead, it functions almost exclusively as a structural component or radical within botanical characters.
