Pictograph of a cover.
About
The character 襾 functions both independently and as a radical, conveying the action of covering or a physical cover. A pictograph, it originally depicted a lid or cloth draped over a container, illustrating the motion of enclosing an object from above. Etymologically, it forms the base for compound characters related to covering or hiding, such as those in 覃 and 覆. Its use as a standalone verb for "to cover" was later replaced by more complex characters, leaving it primarily as a structural radical in traditional dictionaries.
