About
The traditional character 鄉 originated as a pictograph of two people kneeling face to face, sharing a meal, evoking communal feasting (now written 饗) and the bonds of those living together. Over time, the meaning shifted to "hometown" and "countryside". The simplified character 乡 was formed by removing the right two components of 鄉, retaining only the left side. Today, 乡 denotes a rural area or native village, often an administrative division smaller than a town, and carries strong connotations of local community, shared origins, and the rural landscape in contrast to urban centers.
