The Chinese word 俄罗斯 (Éluósī) for "Russia" is formed through a process of phonetic borrowing, where characters are selected primarily for their sound to approximate the pronunciation of a foreign name. It originates not directly from "Russia" but from the Mongolian term for the Rus' people, which was "Oros", and this was rendered into Manchu as "Oros" before being adopted into Chinese.
