About
The character 俄 is a phono-semantic compound, combining the person radical 亻 (rén) on the left with the phonetic component 我 (wǒ) on the right. Historically, it functioned as an adverb indicating something sudden or brief, and could also describe a leaning or tilted posture. In modern usage, however, its meaning shifted dramatically. Chosen for its phonetic value, 俄 was used to transliterate the first syllable of "Russia", and it now primarily serves as the standard abbreviation for the country and its language, largely supplanting its original definitions.
