Etymology

About

卮 (zhī) refers to an ancient circular drinking vessel common during the Warring States period and the Han Dynasty. Its semi-enclosed structure includes the component 㔾 (jié), which relates to a kneeling figure or a seal. The vessel held substantial amounts of liquid and was typically made from jade, bronze, or lacquered wood, often with ring handles and three small feet. Beyond its literal use in banquets, the character appears in classical philosophy. In the Zhuangzi, the term 卮言 (zhīyán), or "goblet words", metaphorically describes speech that is fluid and adaptable, naturally accommodating shifting perspectives like a tilting wine vessel.
