Etymology
Pictograph of a person (大) with a cangue (torture device for punishing criminals) around his neck. People wearing such devices were not able to reach their mouth with their own hands, and were forced to beg for food.
About
The character 央, meaning 'center' or 'middle,' originated as a pictograph of a person (大) wearing a cangue around the neck. The central placement of this restraining device on the figure conveyed the notion of being in the middle, and because a cangue prevents the wearer from raising their hands to reach their mouth, forcing them to beg for food, 央 also developed the extended meaning 'to plead' or 'to beg.'
