About
英 combines the grass radical 艹 (cǎo) with the phonetic 央 (yāng). Originally, it meant a particularly beautiful, fruitless flower. This image of a blossom standing out gave rise to figurative meanings of outstanding talent, brilliance, or a heroic individual. It is still used to describe heroes and exceptional human qualities. Later, its sound was borrowed to transcribe "England" and "English", now its most frequent modern usage.
