Etymology
Pictograph of a kneeling person smoothing out their unkempt hair with their hands. Based on the original meaning "conform, obey". The 口 (mouth) component was added later when the character became more abstract.
About
The character "若" derives from an early pictorial representation conveying notions of compliance or agreement, which informed its modern structure consisting of the grass radical "艹" positioned above the phonetic component "右". Its initial meaning associated with acquiescence gradually broadened in classical usage to serve as a comparative term meaning "like" or "as", and it later evolved into a conditional conjunction equivalent to "if" in modern Chinese.
