About
The Chinese word 有害 (yǒuhài), meaning "harmful" or "detrimental", is a subject-predicate compound formed by combining the character 有 (yǒu, "to have" or "there is") with 害 (hài, "harm" or "damage"). The logic of its formation is descriptive: it literally conveys that something "has harm" or "possesses damaging qualities". This structure is analogous to how many Chinese adjectives are formed, where a verb (有) governs an object (害) to create a stative meaning describing a property of a noun. Its direct antonym, 无害 (wúhài, "harmless"), follows the same grammatical pattern by simply negating the verb (无/無, "to not have").
