Pictograph of one foot in front of another, depicting footsteps.
About
The character 步 (bù) is an ideogram illustrating the act of walking. Its structure combines two components related to feet: the upper semantic radical 止 (zhǐ), depicting a left foot, and the lower portion representing a right foot. Placing a left foot and a right foot one after the other visually conveys continuous movement. The original meaning refers to a single step, a pace, or the act of strolling. This literal sense of physical motion extends metaphorically to stages in a process, sequences of events, and rates of progress, linking steps to developmental phases.
