About
The character 繙 combines the silk radical 糸 with the phonetic component 番. The silk radical references the threads used to bind bamboo slips or scrolls, while 番 contributes the sound and a sense of turning or alternating. Originally, the character described the physical act of unrolling, untying, or flipping through a scroll. Its meaning later extended to the intellectual process of interpreting or translating foreign languages. In historical texts, 繙 often appears as a variant of 翻 when referring to translation, reading, or the careful study of documents.
