经 is the simplified form of 經, which combines the silk radical 纟 (from 糹) with the component 巠. Originally, 巠 depicted the vertical warp threads on a loom, and the 纟 element was added later to emphasize the meaning. The character's primary sense is the warp thread, the straight, continuous threads that form the foundation of weaving, in contrast to the horizontal weft. This image of core, enduring threads led to extended meanings of classic books, orthodox texts, and fundamental principles. It also developed verbal uses: to pass through, experience, regulate, or undergo.
