维 is the simplified form of the traditional character 維, a phonosemantic compound. The left side, the simplified silk radical 纟 (from traditional 糸), provides the semantic clue: the character originally referred to ropes, cords, or nets. The right side is 隹 (zhuī), a bird character, serving solely to indicate the pronunciation. In early texts, it denoted heavy ropes for tying things together or thick nets for catching birds. Over time, the meaning evolved from physical binding to abstract ideas of maintaining, preserving, and representing dimensions.
