潍 (wéi, traditional 濰) is a phono-semantic compound: the water radical 氵 on the left signals a body of water, while the right side is the simplified phonetic 维 (traditionally 維, combining the silk radical 糹 and the phonetic element 隹). The character serves almost exclusively as a proper noun for the Wei River in Shandong province, and appears in place names such as Weifang. It has not developed extended meanings.
