The character 萚 refers to plants shedding their leaves or the fallen leaves themselves. It is the simplified form of the traditional character 蘀, which combined the grass radical 艹 (indicating vegetation) with the phonetic component 睪. In its simplified form, 萚 retains the semantic grass radical 艹 on top but replaces the complex lower element with the simpler component 𠬤, derived from the character for “choose.” This streamlining preserves the botanical meaning associated with seasonal leaf fall, withered foliage, or the stripping of bark and leaves from trees.
