The character 萜 is a modern creation, formed with the semantic grass radical 艹 atop the phonetic component 帖. Coined for organic chemistry, it directly phonetically translates the scientific term terpene. The grass radical 艹 was deliberately chosen to reflect the botanical origins of terpenes, a large class of organic compounds chiefly produced by plants and conifers as essential oils.
