About
The character 硏 is a phono-semantic compound. Its left side features the stone radical 石, linking it semantically to rocks or hard materials, while the right side contains the phonetic component 幵. As an orthographical variant of the more common 研, it originally described the physical act of grinding or crushing with a stone implement, such as grinding ink on an inkstone or pulverizing herbs. This meaning later evolved from a concrete manual action to an abstract intellectual one, signifying deep investigation, careful study, and rigorous research, metaphorically grinding down to the core of a subject.
