About
The character 孰 (shú) combines 享 (a temple or offering) with 丮 (a person with both hands outstretched), depicting an offering of food at a temple; its original meaning is "offer sacrifice". This is the ancestral form of 熟 (shú), which later added the fire radical (灬) to specify cooking. Though the right side now resembles 丸, it was originally 丮. Early on, 孰 was phonetically loaned as an interrogative pronoun in classical Chinese, meaning "who", "which", or "what", used to ask for a choice among individuals or options. While largely replaced in modern speech, it persists in fixed literary expressions such as 孰是孰非 (shú shì shú fēi), "who is right and who is wrong".
