About
尧 (yáo) is the simplified form of 堯, originally depicting a tall, lofty mound. The traditional character stacks three 土 (earth) components on top of 兀, a raised, flat platform, creating an image of piled-up soil and elevation. This gave the character its root meaning "tall, lofty", which later became the name of the legendary sage emperor Yao. The modern simplification compresses the upper part but retains the base 兀, preserving both the literal sense of height and the figurative senses of eminence and moral loftiness.
