Etymology

Phonosemantic compound. 木 represents the meaning and 卓 represents the sound.

About

桌 is a phono-semantic compound: 木 ('wood'), the semantic component at the bottom, indicates the material; 卓 ('high'), the phonetic component on top, supplies the sound. Originally, 卓 alone was used. As ancient Chinese seating shifted from floor mats to raised furniture, 卓 came to denote elevated wooden surfaces. To distinguish the concrete piece of furniture from the abstract concept of 'high', the wood radical was added, yielding the dedicated character 桌. It now exclusively means a table or desk, an elevated flat surface for working, eating, or placing objects, and has no distinct traditional form.
