About
缠 (traditional: 纏) is a phono-semantic compound. Its left side, the silk radical 纟 (mì, derived from 糸), contributes the meaning of threads, textiles, and binding. The right side, 廛 (chán), originally referred to marketplaces or property, but here it is purely phonetic. The character originally denoted the physical action of winding, wrapping, or coiling a thread around an object. From this literal sense, it extended to figurative meanings: being entangled in a difficult situation, having one's time tied up, or pestering someone insistently (as if winding around them), much like a tangled web.
