The Chinese character 膵 (cuì) is a modern anatomical term created for the pancreas. It is a phono-semantic compound: the left radical 月 (yuè), derived from 肉 (ròu, flesh), indicates its association with the body and internal organs. The right component 萃 (cuì) provides the pronunciation and originally means a collection or gathering.
