About
蕗 (lù) is a phono-semantic character: the grass radical 艹 (cǎo) marks it as a plant, while the phonetic component 路 (lù, 'road') gives the sound. Historically, the character referred to various plants in different texts, but in modern usage it almost always means the butterbur (also called sweetbrier). This combination of a plant classifier with a homophonous marker is the standard way Chinese characters name flora.
