About

(lù) is a phono-semantic character: the grass radical (cǎo) marks it as a plant, while the phonetic component (lù, 'road') gives the sound. Historically, the character referred to various plants in different texts, but in modern usage it almost always means the butterbur (also called sweetbrier). This combination of a plant classifier with a homophonous marker is the standard way Chinese characters name flora.
