About
謪 is a phono-semantic compound character that shares both etymology and meaning with 商 (shāng). It combines the semantic radical 言 (yán) 'speech' on the left with the phonetic component 商 on the right, placing it squarely in the domain of talk and discussion. In classical dictionaries, its definition is identical to that of its phonetic when used verbally: to deliberate, consult, or measure. Functionally, 謪 was a specialized variant that simply underscored the spoken aspect of deliberation, adding little beyond what 商 already conveyed. As such, it fell out of use, and the simpler, un-radicalized 商 became the sole surviving form.
