About
醡 is a phono-semantic compound: the semantic radical on the left, 酉, relates to fermentation, alcohol, and wine vessels, while the phonetic component on the right, 窄, gives the sound. Historically, it named a wine press, the specialized agricultural equipment and the physical process of pressing liquid from fermented grains or fruits. Although it shares the general mechanical action of applying heavy pressure with the more common variant 榨, the inclusion of the alcohol radical restricts its use to the production of alcoholic beverages or the extraction of organic liquids.
