variant of 廓[kuò]
Etymology
About
A phono-semantic compound, 霩 combines the rain radical 雨 (yǔ) at the top with the phonetic 郭 (guō) below. 雨 anchors the character in weather, while 郭, originally meaning "outer city wall", supplies the sound. It first described the sky clearing after prolonged rain or snow, and later broadened into an adjective meaning spacious or expansive, an openness evoking an unobstructed sky and the wide terrain beyond city walls.
