About
The character 麿 is a kokuji, a character invented in Japan rather than adopted from Chinese. It is a vertical composition of 麻 (má) above 吕 (lǚ), the components selected for their Japanese phonetic values, not their meanings: 麻 provides "ma" and 吕 provides "ro", together rendering the pronunciation "maro". Originally, it was created to write a classical first-person pronoun meaning "I", commonly used by nobility and court officials in ancient times. It later became a popular suffix in male given names, appearing widely in historical records and traditional naming conventions.
