The earliest forms showed the plant growing beneath a cliff overhang, later written as 广 and understood as a shelter where hemp was dried, processed, or stored. The character primarily means the hemp plant, along with its textile fibers and oil-rich seeds. Because consuming parts of the plant can cause loss of sensation, 麻 also conveys numbness, anesthesia, or tingling. The rough, coarse texture of hemp fabric extended the meaning to anything rough, dense, or prickly.
