梦 is the simplified form of 夢. In its traditional form, 夢 originally depicted a person with an emphasized eye (𦰋) sleeping on a bed (爿), conveying "dream"; the eye component also indicated the pronunciation. Later, the bed element 爿 was reanalyzed as the meaning component 夕 (evening). The simplified character 梦 keeps 夕 at the bottom and reduces the complex upper part of 夢 to 林. This gives the character a surface structure of "forest" over "evening", but its origins lie in the ancient pictographic representation of a dreaming person. The meaning has always referred to the images, emotions, and thoughts that occur during sleep, and by extension to illusions or aspirations.
