About
穈 is a phono-semantic compound: 麻 (hemp) atop provides the sound, while 禾 (grain radical) below indicates a cereal plant. It originally designated a particular variety of tall red millet, a staple grain in ancient agricultural societies. As farming practices shifted and grain terminology became more standardized, the character fell out of common use and now survives only in classical agricultural texts and historical literature on early crop cultivation.
