About

The character 穈 is a phono-semantic compound with the hemp component 麻 at the top serving as the phonetic element and the grain radical 禾 at the bottom indicating its semantic category of cereal crops. Historically, it referred specifically to a tall variety of red millet, a staple grain in ancient China. As agricultural terminology standardized and general terms replaced such specific ones, the character fell out of common use and now appears primarily in classical agricultural texts and historical literature about ancient crop cultivation.
