About
Originally a pictograph of a wheat plant, the traditional character (來) showed roots, a stalk, and awns. Over time, through phonetic borrowing, it came to mean "to come", losing its connection to wheat in everyday use. The simplified form (来) reduces the complex wheat depiction to a simpler arrangement of horizontal and diagonal strokes above a tree-like base. The character now denotes movement toward the speaker or a focal point, functions as a directional complement following other verbs, marks the start of an action, and represents approaching future events.
