About
The Chinese character 糙 (cāo) describes things that are rough, coarse, unrefined, or poorly made. It is a phono-semantic compound: the left side, the rice radical 米 (mǐ), provides the semantic category, as the character originally referred to unpolished brown rice with its rough outer bran. The right side, 造 (zào), which means "to make" or "to build", functions here solely as the phonetic component. Over time, the meaning broadened from describing unrefined grains to encompassing any physically harsh surface, as well as careless work, crude behavior, or roughly executed tasks.
