About

The Chinese character 繐 is a phono-semantic compound. Its left radical 糸 (silk) provides the semantic category of textiles, while the right component 惠 supplies the pronunciation. Historically, it denoted a fine, loosely woven silk known for being lightweight and somewhat transparent. Due to this delicate and plain quality, the term became closely associated with mourning attire, appearing in historical texts to describe garments worn during periods of grief.
