About

The character is a phono-semantic compound originally used to describe a tiger's appearance. It consists of the tiger radical (hū) indicating the semantic field, and (bì) providing the sound. In its earliest use, it depicted the stripes or the fierce face of a tiger. This descriptive meaning later fell away, and the character became primarily a surname. It also took on an association with secrecy and stillness, serving as a variant of (mì).
