knee-pads; buskins

Etymology

About

The character (fú) is composed of the clothing radical (yī), marking its semantic link to garments, and the phonetic element (bá). It was coined for a specific archaic garment: knee pads or leg wrappings used for protection or warmth. Because of this narrow, historical usage, it appears almost exclusively in records of old attire, military equipment, or traditional dress. Over time, it has not developed any abstract senses, staying firmly tied to the physical item of lower-limb protective covering.
