The character "靣" originated as a pictographic representation of a human face, with its form gradually stabilizing into a rectangular shape containing internal strokes that suggested facial features. Its core meaning was the physical face, but over time this semantic range extended to include surfaces, aspects, and directional orientations. The traditional form "靣" was structurally simplified to "面", which reduced the stroke count while retaining the essential configuration.
