(verb) to give

Etymology

Embellishment of the phonetically similar character .

About

The character "予" originally functioned as a first-person pronoun in classical Chinese, equivalent to "I" or "me", and subsequently developed a verbal meaning of "to give" or "to grant". Etymologically, this shift represents an expansion of its semantic range, where the same character was employed for both self-reference and the act of bestowing. In its modern form, the structure consists of four strokes without decomposable semantic components. While its pronominal use has been largely replaced by "我" in contemporary language, the verbal sense endures in formal expressions and compound words such as "授予" and "予以".
