About
宿 originally depicted a person (亻) resting on a bamboo mat (㐁) under a roof (宀), directly conveying the idea of taking shelter or lodging for the night. Over time, the mat component was written as 百. From this basic notion of overnight rest, the character came to designate the lunar mansions (宿), the constellations where the moon and planets appear to pause in their orbits. By extension, it also refers to things long-standing, old, or predestined, as if fixed in place from a former life. The roof radical (宀) continually grounds these diverse senses in the fundamental concept of a resting place.
