yuān (noun) injustice; grievance; wrong

Etymology

About

The character (yuān) is an ideogram composed of (mì, a cover or confined space) placed over (tù, rabbit). The visual composition depicts a rabbit trapped under a cover, as if caught in a net, unable to escape. This image of helpless confinement physically represents being constrained against one's will. It was extended metaphorically to the abstract notion of suffering injustice, false accusation, or wrongful grievance, capturing the feeling of unfair and helpless confinement associated with legal or social wrongs.
