About

己 (jǐ) is a single-component character formed by three connected strokes in a distinct zigzag shape. Its exact origins in early writing are debated, but it has long served as a fundamental pronoun meaning "self" or "oneself", referring to one's own person or identity. Beyond this primary function, 己 also plays a specific role in traditional Chinese timekeeping as the sixth of the ten Heavenly Stems, used for cyclical counting, calendar marking, and astrological calculations.
