The character 现 is a phono-semantic compound. Its traditional form 現 combines the jade radical 王 (left) for semantic context with the phonetic component 見 (to see). The simplified form replaces 見 with its simplified counterpart 见. Originally, it denoted the luster or gleam of jade catching light. This physical concept of visible radiance extended metaphorically to mean appearing or becoming visible. From there, it came to represent the present moment, current times, and existing circumstances.
