About
琴 originates from a pictograph of a zither-like stringed instrument, now written at the top as two 王 (jade) components, while 今 (jīn) below indicates the pronunciation. It first named the guqin, a revered seven-stringed plucked instrument associated with scholars and literati in ancient China. As Western and other foreign instruments entered Chinese culture, 琴 became a generic ending for many stringed and keyboard instruments, such as 钢琴 (piano, "steel qin") and 小提琴 (violin, "small plucked qin").
