About

砀, or its traditional form 碭, is a phono-semantic compound. The left radical 石 (stone) indicates its semantic category, while the right component 昜 provides the phonetic element in the traditional form. The simplified version replaces 昜 with the abbreviated component 𠃓, which appears in other characters sharing the same historical phonetic root. Originally, the character referred to a specific type of stone known for its colorful, intricate veins or patterns. Over time, its meaning narrowed considerably. Now, 砀 functions almost exclusively as a proper noun, most commonly as the geographic name Dangshan County in Anhui province, and has lost its original material sense.
