About
The modern character 窗 (chuāng) is the common word for a window. It is a phonosemantic compound: 穴 'cave, hole' suggests the meaning, while 囱 (cōng) provides the sound. The phonetic 囱 is a simplified form of 囪, which was originally a pictograph showing a framework of intersecting slats, a skylight or chimney that let smoke escape through the roof. This early architectural feature is the root of the character; its meaning later extended from a roof opening to any latticed or glazed wall opening admitting light and air.
